It is very important, if you are moving and are a piano owner, to hire a moving company that knows what they are doing when it comes to moving pianos (not every moving company is a professional piano mover). Expert piano moving is one of the services that CHEROKEE Van Lines is proud to offer. We have the equipment and the knowledge needed to safely move pianos in the most diverse situations. Pricing varies depending on our schedule. Here we present a list of the most common pianos with pictures, description, and methods of how we move them. Concert Grand and some Grand Pianos require a special piano skid that is made long enough to set the longest side of the piano down onto it. If you require moving any type of Grand Piano it is important to measure the longest side of the piano and call our office with the measurement so that the proper size piano board will be assigned to that truck. We also rent dollies and piano skids, if temporary storage on your site is needed (a refundable deposit is required). Contact our office for more information.
Baby Grand Pianos are one of the most common styles that we move. For this reason we carry the piano skid for this piano on our trucks at all times. Like the larger grand pianos they are placed on their side on the piano skid, padded and strapped then moved.
Upright Pianos can be different in height, but they are most commonly full size uprights like the old “saloon style” seen in most of the old western movies. The Upright piano can be moved on a piano skid or when there is no steps involved a 4-wheel dolly may be all that is needed. These Upright style pianos are most often found in the basement. If there has been any remolding to the basement after the piano was placed down there, the piano or the basement will have to be compromised. In a situation where the structure of the home has changed and the piano can no longer exit the home, we can disassemble the piano, but we do not reassemble it (this is generally done to discard the piano).
Spinet Pianos are very common. They can be moved on a piano skid or a 4-wheel dolly, even where stairs may exist. The Spinet style piano is generally the easiest of the piano styles to move. Keep in mind though as mentioned above “not every moving company is a professional piano mover”. This page can help our customers to let us know which style of piano they have, so that we can quote them for the correct job as well as send the right man power and equipment. The most common question our customers have when quoting them is whether they have a Spinet style piano or an Upright piano. Looking above at the pictures of the Upright and the Spinet you can see the difference in the front legs between the two. An upright pianos (full size or short) front legs connect to a block that ties into the body of the piano. Where a Spinet on the other hand has legs that resemble a table. They go to the floor and generally have wheels on the end of the legs.
